Taiwan: BenQ aims to ship 300,000 handsets in 2006
October 14th, 2006 - Posted in BenQ-SiemensBenQ plans to launch its first HSDPA (high speed downlink packet access) 3.5G handset, the EF91, as well as two 3G models, in Taiwan in the fourth quarter of 2006, with the aim of pushing its combined sales in Taiwan to 300,000 units for the year, according to Hank Hung, general manager for sales at BenQ Taiwan.
With the launch of its new music-focused handset, the EF71, in Taiwan on October 12, Hung stated that the planned launch of new handsets for the rest of this year is on schedule.
However, an October 13 Chinese-language Commercial Times report indicated that the launch of the company’s new WCDMA 3G handset, the EF81, being developed by BenQ Mobile, might be affected after BenQ decided last month to stop funding the Germany-based handset subsidiary.
The clamshell form factor EF71, which features a 2-megapixel built-in camera and supports a variety of audio formats ranging from MP3, WMA to AAC, carries a suggested retail price of NT$9,900 (US$297), according to company sources.
