South Korea’s LG Philips LCD unveiled what it claims to be the world’s thinnest liquid crystal display (LCD) for use in mobile phones.
The new panel, only 1.3 millimetres (0.052 of an inch) thick including the module, is about a third slimmer than the TFT-LCD (thin-film transistor liquid crystal display) panels currently in use for mobile phones.
The existing panels normally measure between 1.9 and 2.9 millimetres.
“This latest technological breakthrough will enable mobile phone manufacturers to produce mobile phones even slimmer than the 6.9 millimetre-thick phones available today,” the company said.
LG Philips LCD’s vice president Hyun He-Ha said the introduction of the super-slim LCD panel will further accelerate the shift to slim design phones.
