Motorola is likely to introduce its first mobile TV handset supporting the DVB-H (digital video broadcasting-handheld) standard in 2007, according to Kinson Loo Kin Sang, Motorola’s vice president and general manager of its mobile devices business for Taiwan and Hong Kong.
Motorola has joined a consortium to bid for a trial operation license to provide mobile TV services in Taiwan, Loo indicated.
Taiwan’s National Communications Commission (NCC) is expected to issue six trial licenses in mid-October, according to sources at NCC.
Motorola’s DVB-H handset will be equipped with a network system and related solutions developed by the company itself, Loo added.
Loo made the remarks on September 21 during a launch of its MOTOKRZR handset in the Taiwan market. The clam-shell form-factor MOTOKRZR, which has a built-in 2-megapixel camera and supports MP3 and AAC music format, carries a suggested retail price of NT$14,900 (US$453), according to sources at Motorola Taiwan.
