Nokia says steps up action against counterfeiters
May 30th, 2006 - Posted in NokiaNokia said on Tuesday it was stepping up its program to fight counterfeiters and distributors of fake handsets.
Nokia said counterfeiting was on the increase in both mobile devices and accessories and it would work with the law to fight against people making fake goods.
The Finnish firm has been battling against pirate products in several regions, including in its Nordic homeland, where customs officials have confiscated thousands of pirate handsets.
Nokia said it had won damages of $1.36 million in a Southern District of Florida court against Suplimet Corp. and Hermann Lozano over an injunction forbidding them to traffic in counterfeit Nokia products.
Nokia said Lozano and his brother, Xavier, had been sentenced to 72 months in jail for trafficking in fake Nokia goods.
