Palm is likely to launch Linux-based smartphones while continuing to roll out mobile phones supporting its own Palm operating system, Paul Blinkhorn, vice president for Asia-Pacific of Palm, was quoted as saying in a recent report on China-based Sina.com.

Palm, in cooperation with China-based CEC Telecom, launched its Chinese version Treo 650 smartphone in China early this month. The GSM/GPRS quad-band Treo 650 uses the Palm OS.

With Palm’s recent acquisition of a Linux-based handset software developer in Nanjing, China, Palm is likely to build mobile phones using the Linux OS, said Blinkhorn, as quoted by Sina.

However, Blinkhorn stated that Palm has no plans to introduce Windows-based smartphones in China at the moment, though the company will soon start marketing its Windows-based Treo 700w in the US.
