Palm unveils new Treo 680 smartphone

Palm tintroduced the new GSM/GPRS/EDGE quad-band Palm Treo 680 smartphone and the availability of Google Map in series of its Palm OS-based smartphones.
Palm said its U.S. retail and online stores will sell exclusively an unlocked GSM version with a music bundle from Yahoo!, which includes a 30-day free trial to its music service. The Treo 680 smartphone also can be used as an MP3 player and has an integrated digital camera, camcorder and video player. A new design in Treo 680 is the internal antenna and slim form factor, making the device smaller and sleeker than its Treo predecessors in the U.S.
Although without revealing the exact pricing of the new offering yet, Palm said Treo 680 will offer an affordable way for users to get started. Company president and CEO Ed Colligan said he expects the new smartphone will be available via 20 or more carriers around the world by the end of June 1, 2007.
Palm also announced that it will deliver the interactive mapping solution from Google to series of Treo smartphones including Treo 680, 700p, 650 and 600. Google Maps for mobile optimized for Palm OS based Treo smartphones is a free downloadable Palm OS application that offers directions, local search, movable/scalable maps, location satellite imagery and traffic updates while on the go.
