Edinburgh University moves to VoIP

The University of Edinburgh has moved to a voice-over-IP (VoIP) system to allow staff more flexibility.

The communications system will link to nearly 10,000 extensions in over 200 buildings throughout the university and allow staff access to remote working opportunities.

Edinburgh’s telecoms and security systems manager, Murray Clayton, says roll out is the first phase of the university’s migration to VoIP.

‘We have been pleased with the results and are now in a position where we can look to further extend our use of VoIP technologies to a larger user group,’ he said.

The system has been supplied for the university by Nec Philips Unified Solutions, and its core server component is already working alongside the current analogue one.
