Ofcom proposes measures to warn VoIP customers
August 27th, 2006 - Posted in VoIPUK telecoms regulator Ofcom has proposed to require VoIP operators to warn customers about deficiencies in their services, reports online news source TeleGeography.
Ofcom is concerned that customers attracted to VoIP packages because of low tariffs may not understand the limitations of such services. For example, most VoIP services do not offer answering machine services, and service may be cut during a power failure.
According to TeleGeography, VoIP operators are protesting the proposal. Skype, a leader in the VoIP market, said that Ofcom’s measure for ’super consumer protection’ was unnecessary, and noted that mobile operators did not have to follow similar rules.
